The Château La Conseillante is a famous French winery and is located in the Pomerol wine region . The manor building is located in the immediate vicinity of the border with the Saint-Émilion wine-growing region . Neighboring goods are the well-known Château Cheval Blanc , Château La Tour-Figeac , Vieux Château Certan and Château L'Evangile . Most of the vineyards are located on a several meter thick gravel deposit that the Isle River brought in from the Massif Central during the Günz Ice Age .

History of the winery

The origins of the agricultural land on the estate go back to Roman times, when there was an estate called "Figeacus" not far from the current building. It belonged to various leading families in the region successively throughout the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, the property became the property of the Carle family, whose member François de Carle was appointed mayor of Saint-Emilion for life by the Sun King Louis XIV . Catherine Conseillan inherited one of the available agricultural areas in 1734 and planted vineyards between 1735 and 1776 on the present-day site, making her one of the first to consistently focus on the expansion of wine in Pomerol. She also relied on a steady increase in her property. A map by Pierre de Belleyme from 1763 shows the area of Pomerol and proves the presence of the vineyards. From 1756 Catherine devoted herself exclusively to her winery, having previously worked in the metal trade in the city of Libourne . The construction of the simple manor building, which still exists today, also took place in the 1750s.

The childless Catherine bequeathed the estate to her niece Marie Despujol. Marie was married to Jean Fourcaud, whose family would later influence Château Cheval Blanc. From the 1820s son Pierre Fourcaud took over the management of the estate. Almost 20 years later, La Conseillante was owned by the Leperche-Princeteau family.

In 1871 Louis Nicolas (died 1880) finally took over the winery.

Marie-France Nicolas d´Arfeuille and Bertrand Nicolas are currently leading the company. They are supported by Jean-Michel Laporte, who followed Arnaud de Lamy a few years ago.

The wine

The small winery has a vineyard area of only 12 hectares , the average age of the vines is 40 years. The current planting has 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc . The château with the name "Die Ratgeberin" has been owned by the Nicolas family since 1871 at the latest. However, the name of the estate comes from Catherine Conseillan , who headed the winery almost 250 years ago. The Nicolas heirs are marked with the label with cut sides and a silver border surrounding the coat of arms "LN".

The aging in barriques is 18 months. Depending on the vintage, 80–100% new oak barrels are used. A second wine , the Duo de Conseillante, has been offered since the 2007 vintage , 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. This wine is aged in older barriques for 12 months.

The purple capsule is reminiscent of the characteristic scent of wine.

The wine from La Conseillante is considered to be one of the richest and most elegant Pomerol wines. The best vintages are the 2000s ( wine rating : 96 Parker points (PP) ), 1998 (90 PP), 1990 (98 PP), 1989 (96 PP), 1985 (94 PP) and 1982 (96 PP). For example , those who find the wine from the nearby Château Pétrus too expensive, but those who value high-class Merlot-type wine from Pomerol, are often very satisfied with the wines from Conseillante.
