Stephen D. Nash

Stephen David Nash (* 1954 in Clacton-on-Sea , Essex , England ) is an English animal illustrator who primarily specializes in primates . He currently works in the Department of Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook University on Long Island , New York, USA.

Life

Nash spent his school days in Clacton-on-Sea. After graduating from Holland Park County Primary School, he graduated from Colbayn's High School in 1973. In the following years he studied art and design at the Colchester School of Art, at Middlesex University and at the Royal College of Art , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design (Scientific Illustration) in 1979 and a Master of Arts in Natural History Illustration in July 1982 graduated. Nash's original career goal was medical draftsman, but after meeting the marmosets at London Zoo , he changed his professional plans. Since 1982 he has worked for Russell Mittermeier , Chairman of the IUCN / SSC Primate Specialist Group and President of Conservation International, and Anthony Rylands , Vice Chairman of the IUCN / SSC Primate Specialist Group. After founding Conservation International in 1987, Nash became its scientific draftsman in 1989. In 1990 he married Luci Betti, who also works as an illustrator. Nash illustrated numerous books, scientific articles and teaching materials for nature conservation, including the works Monkeyshines on the Primates: A Study of Primatology (1994), Lemurs of Madagascar (1994), Primates of West Africa: Pocket Identification Guide (2010) and the third volume of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World on primates (2013). In 2009, Nash created the logo for the open access magazine Journal of Threatened Taxa .

Honors

In 2002, Nash was honored by Marc van Roosmalen and Russell Mittermeier in the epithet of the Stephen Nash jumper monkey ( Callicebus stephennashi ). In 2004 he received the President's Award from the American Society of Primatologists and in 2008 he was awarded the PSGB Occasional Medal by the Primate Society of Great Britain .
