Mico munduruku is a small silky monkey that occurs in the southeastern Amazon basin south of the confluence of the Rio Jamanxim in the Rio Tapajós . The species was only described in mid-2019 and named in honor of the indigenous Munduruku who live on the upper Rio Tapajós.

features

The specimens examined for the first description had a head body length of 18 to 27.6 cm, a 27.7 to 33 cm long tail and weighed 250 to 435 g. The ears are 2.27 to 2.9 cm long and the hind feet are 6.15 to 7 cm long. The animals are predominantly white in color and are the only silk monkey species to have a white tail. The shoulders, chest, stomach, feet, arms and hands are also white. The back, the outsides of the legs and the elbows are beige or yellowish in color. The hairless area of the face is flesh-colored, the area immediately around the nostrils is white. The ears are covered with short white hair, the insides of the ears are flesh-colored. All fingers and toes end in curved claws, with the exception of the big toe, which carries a flat nail.

Mico munduruku is the sister species of a clade made up of the silver monkey ( Mico argentatus ), the brown marmoset ( Mico emiliae ) and the white marmoset ( Mico leucippe ). In contrast to M. munduruku , the white marmoset has a cream-colored fur, yellowish hands and feet and a yellowish tail. The brown marmoset is gray-brown in color and the hands, feet and tail are black. The silver monkey ( Mico argentatus ) is colored silvery white and has dark gray hands and feet as well as a dark brown to black tail.

habitat

The distribution area of Mico munduruku is located in the southwest of the Brazilian state Pará and is enclosed in the east by Rio Novo and the lower reaches of the Rio Jamanxim, in the northwest by the Rio Tapajós and in the southwest by the Rio Cururu . It is approximately 55,000 km² and consists of primary lowland rainforests and secondary terra firme forests. The terra typica lies in the territory of the municipality of Itaituba . The habitat of Mico munduruku has suffered significant environmental damage from illegal logging, the rapid and disorderly transformation of forests into pastureland, the expansion of agricultural land and human settlements. This also applies to regions within protected areas and in the reserves of the indigenous communities.
