Lucy Aharish ( Arabic لوسي هريش, DMG Lūsī Harīš ; Hebrew לוסי אהריש, born September 18, 1981 in Dimona ) is an Arab-Israeli journalist and news anchor . She was the first Muslim- Arabic newscaster on Hebrew-language Israeli television. Aharish has worked in various formats on television and radio and has been a newscaster for the Israeli television station Reshet 13 since 2018 .

Career

Aharish was born in Dimona , Israel , the youngest of three daughters in an Arab-Muslim family. In the summer of 1987, shortly before her sixth birthday, she was slightly injured when Palestinian attackers threw a Molotov cocktail at her family's car in the Gaza Strip . Despite her Arabic origins, she calls Hebrew her mother tongue. Her parents knew that she and her sisters would get a better education with more career opportunities in a Jewish school. They were taught in Hebrew at school and their mother spoke to them in Arabic at home.

After completing her studies in social studies and theater studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , she studied journalism in Tel Aviv and received a scholarship for a semester abroad in Germany.

In 2007 she became the first Arab news anchor for the Israeli television station Channel 10, but left the news program in 2008 due to professional differences.

She then worked as a presenter and journalist on various television and radio programs, and became a newscaster for the international news channel i24news based in Tel Aviv .

For the celebrations of Yom HaAtzma'ut , Israel's Independence Day, in 2015, Aharish was chosen to light one of the torches at the beginning of the ceremony.

Since 2018 she has been working as a newscaster for the Israeli television channel Reshet 13 .

Private life

Aharish has been married to the Jewish- Israeli actor Tzachi Halevy since 2018 . They kept their relationship a secret for four years because they feared hostility.
