The Orwell is a river in the English county of Suffolk . The upper course (outside of the tidal influence ) is also known as the River Gipping . It widens to an estuary at Ipswich and flows into the North Sea at Felixstowe .

The Orwell is a popular river for sailing . The interest originally related to the hamlet of Pin Mill (location of the event in two children's books by Arthur Ransome : We Didn't Mean to go to Sea and Secret Water ).
