The A38 begins in Bodmin in Cornwall on the A30 road and heads east over the junction of the A390 road at Dobwalls , now with separate lanes, past Liskead , where it separates again from the A390, to the southeast. The two-lane section ends at Trerulefood, which is resumed at Saltash at the junction of the A388 road , but is interrupted by the Tamar Bridge at Plymouth, which is partly subject to tolls . The road crosses Plymouth, branches off the A385 road east and turns northeast, passing Buckfastleigh , Ashburton and Chudleigh Knighton and running on the southeast edge of Dartmoor National Park . South of Exeter , the A380 road , which has also been expanded to two lanes, will be added and at the junction with the A30 road coming from the west, the road will merge into the M5 motorway . It leaves this at junction 27, but runs largely parallel to it and no longer designated as a primary route, to Taunton and on via Bridgwater . East of Burnham-on-Sea it becomes the primary route again at junction 22 of the M5, crosses the motorway and runs via Axbridge and on through North Somerset and through Bristol , where it loses its character as a primary route again, leaving the city to the north and follows the M5 through the Vale of Berkeley . At junction 12 of the M5, it becomes the primary route again for a short section, bypassing the city of Gloucester and then following the M5 as an easy country road north via Worcester and Droitwich Spa . It meets the M5 again at junction 5, becomes the primary route and leads to Birmingham , where it forms the A38 (M) motorway for a short section ( Spaghetti Junction ) and which it leaves in a north-easterly direction. It then follows the M6 Toll motorway to the north, leaves it at the junction with the A5 road and runs past Lichfield to the north-east, bypassing Burton-upon-Trent , crossing the A50 road at Willington and passing Derby (Derbyshire) in the west crossing the A52 road . After crossing the A6 road , the A38 continues via Ripley , where it crosses the A610 road coming from Nottingham , and past Alfreton with the junction of the A61 road over the M1 motorway and Sutton in Ashfield to Mansfield . There it meets the A60 road and ends.
