history

At Casterton Fell near Kirkby Lonsdale there is a stone circle from the Stone Age , which indicates an early settlement of the region. A Roman road which in Roman times connected forts at Over Burrow south of the village and at Low Borrow Bridge (near Tebay ) north of the village.

Kirkby Lonsdale was created at a meeting point for various trade routes that crossed the River Lune here. The place is already mentioned in the Domesday Book and referred to as a place with a church. This church was replaced by the new construction of St. Mary's Church (now a Grade I monument ) after the Norman Conquest . The Normans also built a wooden watchtower on the northern edge of the village, which was surrounded by a wall that is still visible today.

The view of the River Lune from the grounds of St. Mary's Church was lauded by John Ruskin and is still known today as Ruskin's View and was painted by William Turner .

Kirkby Lonsdale received the market rights in 1227 and the right to organize a trade fair with a fair every September . That is why there is still a weekly market every Thursday, but the event in September no longer takes place.

Arkholme-with-Cawood station served as the city's train station until 1960 .
