history

It is believed that the name "Carnforth" derives from a ford through the River Keer, which was located on the site of the present day location. Accordingly, "Keer-ford" would have become "Carnforth" over time. A Victorian history of Lancashire is said to lead the name back to the Anglo-Saxon name "Chreneforde".

The place was dominated by the steel industry between 1846 and 1929, which had originally settled here because of the large limestone quarries located nearby , since the limestone was of great importance in the smelting of the iron ore that was delivered by rail.

Until the closure of the station as a stop on the West Coast Main Line in the 1960s, Carnforth was a major railway junction as a meeting point for railway lines. Today, only regional trains from Lancaster to Barrow-in-Furness or Leeds stop at Carnforth.

Carnforth Train Station was one of the main locations for the film " Brief Encounter " by David Lean from 1945. Fans of this film have made a significant contribution to the restoration of the common room according to the film.

The Lancaster Canal runs through Carnforth and the nearby M6 is directly connected to the town by the A601 (M).
