Lee Jason Hurst (born September 21, 1970 in Nuneaton ) is a former English football player . The midfielder played 49 first division games for Coventry City in the early 1990s before he had to end his career early due to injury.

Career

Lee Hurst came to Coventry City in October 1985 while he was still at school and in 1987, after graduating from high school, received a trainee contract as part of the Youth Training Scheme . In May 1989, Hurst signed his first professional contract and made his competitive debut on January 29, 1991, in the FA Cup against Southampton FC . In the following weeks, the young player came as a replacement for Paul Edwards in the left-back position several times in the First Division .

Although Coventry signed another left-back in the spring of 1991 with the 86-time England international Kenny Sansom , Hurst brought it to ten season games in the 1991/92 season due to injury-related failures. For the following season , the first in the newly created Premier League , Hurst was brought forward by coach Bobby Gould to the left midfield position. There he secured himself a regular place with his speed and dangerous flank runs. In 35 season appearances, all of them as part of the starting line-up, he scored two goals and was named “Man of the Match” several times.

In preparation for the 1993/94 season, Hurst suffered a severe knee ligament injury and subsequently had to end his professional career without having played another competitive game. In 1998 he made a brief comeback in the US at Charleston Battery , where he played 14 season games in the USISL A-League . Hurst is a member of the Coventry City Former Players Association and regularly attends alumni gatherings and charity games.
