Peter Michael Whittingham (born September 8, 1984 in Nuneaton , England , † March 19, 2020 in Cardiff , Wales ) was an English football player . The 17-time U21 international came from the youth division of Aston Villa ; From 2007 to 2017, the midfielder played at Cardiff City in over 450 competitive games, rose to the Premier League with the club in 2013 and made it to the finals of both the FA Cup (2008) and the League Cup (2012).
Career
Aston Villa
Whittingham made his debut for Aston Villa in the second half of the 2002/03 Premier League . His breakthrough as a regular for the club from Birmingham he achieved in the following season, when he was used in 32 league games. Due to shorter periods of play 2004/05 he was loaned to the second division Burnley FC in the second half of the season. In the 2005/06 season he moved on loan to Derby County , which also played in the second division. In the Football League Championship 2008/09 Cardiff was able to improve significantly and only narrowly missed the play-offs with seventh place. Only one more goal led the Preston North End team with the same point and goal difference to sixth place. City also played successfully in the 2009/10 season and ended the year in fourth place in the table. After a success in the first play-off round against Leicester City , Whittingham moved with his team into the play-off final. The game was played in Wembley on May 22, 2010 and Blackpool FC won 3-2. With that, Cardiff missed promotion to the Premier League very closely. Peter Whittingham had an excellent season, scoring 20 goals in 41 league appearances. He was together with Nicky Maynard of Bristol City top scorer of the second division. He also received the honor of being named Player of the Month October 2009 and was accepted into the PFA Team of the Year of the Football League Championship 2009/10.
National team
Peter Whittingham made 17 appearances for England's U21 national team between 2003 and 2007 , scoring three goals. He also participated with other players like Ashley Young , James Milner , Joe Hart and Leighton Baines at the U21 European Championship in 2007 in part in the Netherlands. England failed in the semifinals with 12:13 after penalties at the hosts.
death
Whittingham suffered a serious head injury in a fall in a pub in Barry on March 7, 2020 . He was admitted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injury twelve days later.
