A55 road ( English for ' A55 road '), also known as the North Wales Expressway (Welsh: Gwibffordd Gogledd Cymru ) is a trunk road in Great Britain ( England and Wales ). It forms part of the European route 22 and, via the Holyhead - Dublin ferry route, part of the cheapest route from Great Britain to Dublin in Ireland . The road runs from Chester in Kent to Holyhead on the Isle of Anglesey . It begins east of Chester as an extension of the M53 motorway , then forms the Chester south bypass (Chester southerly bypass). West of Chester it crosses the border between England and Wales, then runs in a north-westerly direction through Denbighshire and on through Conwy , reaches the coast at Abergele, which it follows to Colwyn Bay, runs south of Llandudno off the coastline and reaches the coast again at Conwy. It follows it until shortly before Bangor , crosses the Menai Strait , which separates Anglesey from the British main island, on the Britannia Bridge and runs in the interior of the island of Anglesey to Holyhead on the island of Holy Island , where the ferry to Dublin connects. The road has separate carriageways for almost its entire length and the junctions, the counting of which begins with No. 1 in Holyhead and ends with No. 40 at Chester, are not level with the exception of two roundabouts . Important locations along the route are Chester , Bangor and Holyhead .
