The road starts north of Shrewsbury at a roundabout with the A49 road , crosses the A41 road at Ternhill , bypasses Market Drayton , then crosses the A51 road and the M6 motorway without direct access until it comes to Newcastle-under-Lyme and then Stoke-on -Trent reached. You leave this town in a north-easterly direction, crosses the A523 road in Leek and ends shortly after the junction with the A54 road in Buxton in the Peak District ,
