Carl Bertuch

Carl Bertuch (born December 27, 1777 in Weimar ; † October 5, 1815 ibid) was a German journalist and writer.

Life

Bertuch was the son of the publicist and entrepreneur Friedrich Justin Bertuch . After attending school in his hometown, he studied geography, art history and natural sciences at the University of Jena . After successfully completing his studies, he traveled to Paris for a long time .

On returning to Weimar, he was entrusted with the management of the magazine London & Paris . At the same time, he worked with his father on the editorial team of the Journal of Luxury and Fashion . Bertuch soon made the acquaintance of the writer Johanna Schopenhauer there and over time was accepted into her circle.

In the years that followed, Bertuch made frequent trips, of which he reported in detail in magazines. Together with Johann Friedrich Cotta , the Association of German Booksellers sent him to the Congress of Vienna in 1814 in order to achieve a law against the prevalent reprinting. His diary from this period is a cultural and historical document of inestimable value, as it gives an extremely vivid account of the circumstances under which the congress took place. Bertuch got to know artists such as Ludwig van Beethoven , Giacomo Meyerbeer , Ignaz Moscheles and Antonio Salieri as well as many political greats .

Carl Bertuch died on October 5, 1815 in Weimar at the age of almost 38.
