The Journal des Luxus und der Moden was a German fashion magazine that was published under this title from 1787 to 1812 and under other titles until 1827. The journal was launched in 1786 by the Weimar publisher Friedrich Justin Bertuch in collaboration with the artist Georg Melchior Kraus , in the first year still as a journal of fashions . It appeared monthly in the form of a 30-page loose-leaf collection and reached around 25,000 readers, making it the first really popular periodical on fashion in Germany.
Title and content
The title of the magazine has changed several times over the years:
- 1st year (1786): Journal der Moden
- Volume 2 - 27 (1787–1812): Journal of Luxury and Fashions
- 28th year (1813): Journal for luxury, fashion and objects of art
- Volume 29 - 41 (1814–1826): Journal for literature, art, luxury and fashion
- 42nd year (1827): Journal for literature, art and social life
In addition to reports on new developments in clothing fashion in the metropolises of Europe, illustrated with elaborate colored copperplate engravings , the journal also contained articles on numerous other topics such as theater, interior design, music, garden design and political events.

The culture magazine TransAtlantik contained a section Journal of Luxury and Fashions.
