The Hawke's Bay Rugby Union ( HBRU ) is the rugby union -Provinzverband the region Hawke's Bay on the North Island of New Zealand . The association's selection team in the national championship ITM Cup plays its home games at McLean Park in the city of Napier .
Hawke's Bay owned the Ranfurly Shield twice , from 1922 to 1927 (defended 24 times) and from 1966 to 1969 (defended 21 times). The HBRU merged with the Manawatu Rugby Union in 1997 . The new association Central Vikings Rugby Union existed for only one year and separated again.
Hawke's Bay players are eligible to play in the international super rugby league and are called up by the Hurricanes .
