Mamuka Gorgodse ( Georgian მამუკა გორგოძე ; born July 14, 1984 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian rugby union player . He plays in the position of number eight or the flanker (winger) and is currently under contract with the French top 14 division RC Toulon . For the Georgian national rugby union team he took part in four world championships.

life and career

Mamuka Gorgodse switched from basketball to rugby at the age of 17 . His first club in the highest Georgian league (Didi 10) were the Lelo Saracens in Tbilisi. Shortly thereafter, Gorgodze was called up to the Georgian national rugby union team and he made his debut against Spain in 2003 at the age of just 18. However, he did not take part in the World Cup in the same year. In 2004 Gorgodse became a regular in the national team. In 2005 Mamuka Gorgodse signed a contract with the French top 14 club Montpellier Hérault RC . At first he got hardly any match practice in the first team, only after his participation in the 2007 World Cup he became a regular player at Montpellier. In the 2010/2011 season Gorgodse reached the final of the French championship with Montpellier, but it was lost to Stade Toulousain . At the subsequent World Cup in 2011 , Gorgodze took part in all four games of the Georgian national team and was voted "Man of the match" in two games. In November 2013 he signed a contract for the 2014/2015 season with the first division club RC Toulon . In 2015 he and his team won the European Rugby Champions Cup . At the 2015 World Cup , Gorgodze took part as captain in all four games of the Georgian national team and made two attempts . In 2016 and 2017 Mamuka Gorgodse reached the final of the French championship with Toulon. Both finals were lost against Racing 92 (2016) and against ASM Clermont Auvergne (2017). He also took part in all four of his team's games at the Rugby Union World Cup in 2019 , starting three times and being substituted on once.
