Mathew James Tait (born February 6, 1986 in Wolsingham , County Durham ) is an English rugby union player . He plays as goalkeeper , outside three quarters or inside three quarters for the England team and the Leicester Tigers .

Tait went through numerous youth national teams before joining the Newcastle Falcons in 2003 . In May 2004 ran for the first time for the club in a Guinness Premiership match , opponents were the London Irish . He succeeded with his first touch of the ball, the first attempt of his professional career.

Tait played a major role in winning the silver medal in rugby 7 at the 2006 Commonwealth Games . With nine attempts he was the top scorer of the competition. He had previously won the Churchill Cup with England A.

Shortly before his 19th birthday, Tait played for the England men's national team for the first time. However, he then had to wait 16 more months to come on a second assignment. He was part of the national team for the 2007 World Cup and, at 21 years and 256 days, was the youngest English player to have played a World Cup final. He almost succeeded in one attempt, and ultimately South Africa lost .

At the Six Nations 2008 he replaced Mike Tindall after his injury for the duration of the tournament. At the end of the season he moved from Newcastle to the Sale Sharks. In the summer he was taken on the tour to New Zealand , where he was used in a game.
