The Irish Rail took over in 1994, the first locomotive of the 201 series (model JT 42HCW). At that time, Irish Rail could look back on 30 years of experience with EMD products. The first machine was brought to Ireland on an Antonov 124 cargo plane . The 201 series has two terminal cabs and a central power supply for passenger train use.

Two of the class 201 locomotives are owned by NI Railways .

Others

7 of the 34 units in the 201 series were painted to match the design of the “Enterprise” express train from Dublin to Belfast .

The others wear the orange, black and yellow of the Iarnród Éireann or the blue of NIR .
