Brittany Howard (born October 2, 1988 in Athens , Alabama ) is an American musician, singer and songwriter. She became known as the front woman of the American rock band Alabama Shakes , but she is also active as a solo artist and released her solo album Jaime in 2019 as well as the song History Repeats, which was nominated for two Grammy Awards .

Britanny Howard was born in Athens , Alabama in 1988 to a white mother and a black father. The family home was in a junkyard and burned down once from a lightning strike. She learned poetry and playing the piano from her older sister Jaime, who died in 1998 at the age of 13 of retinoblastoma , a malignant tumor in the retina of the eye. She also developed this genetic condition as a toddler, but survived with partial blindness in one eye. Her father left the family shortly after Jaime died. She began playing the guitar at the age of 13 and later attended East Limestone High School, where she met future Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell. She worked for the United States Post Office until becoming a full-time musician as the lead singer for Alabama Shakes.

Brittany Howard became internationally known as the lead singer and guitarist of the rock band Alabama Shakes. The band was founded jointly by her, Zac Cockrell and drummer Steve Johnson under the name The Shake, and played covers and their own songs. In September 2011, they released their first self-titled four-song EP Alabama Shakes and received several requests from labels. Enlarged by guitarist Heath Fogg, the band began performing in bars in Alabama and recording their debut album Boys & Girls , which they released in 2012 on the ATO Records label. The Alabama Shakes were nominated in 2013 as “ best new artists ” for a Grammy Award and for the BRIT Award for International Group , they received further Grammy nominations in 2013 for the song Hold On and in 2014 for Always Alright . In 2015, the album Sound & Color followed , which was also nominated for a Grammy ( Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album ) in 2016 and won it. The band received two more Grammys in 2016 for the song Don't Wanna Fight ( Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance and Grammy Award for Best Rock Song ) and in 2018 they received another nomination for the Killer Diller Blues ( Grammy Award for Best American Roots Performance ).

Brittany Howard is also the lead singer of the rock band Thunderbitch, which was founded in Nashville in 2012 with members of the bands Clear Plastic Masks and Fly Golden Eagle and released a self-titled album in September 2015. She is also the singer in the band Bermuda Triangle with Jesse Lafser and Becca Mancari, which was founded in Nashville in 2017.

In June 2019, Brittany Howard announced a debut solo album titled Jaime , named after her late sister. The album was released on September 20, 2019, followed by a tour of North America and Europe. The song History Repeats was nominated for two Grammys, for best rock song as well as best rock performance .
