MTV Unplugged in New York is a live album by the American rock band Nirvana . It was on 18 November 1993 for the MTV telecast MTV Unplugged recorded and published nearly a year later in October 1994th The concert was televised worldwide and it was not planned to be released on CD immediately afterwards. With Something In the Way and Oh, Me , the album contains two songs that were not shown on television. About a Girl was released as a single from the album .

The concert

Nirvana played mostly less well-known pieces, with Come as You Are only one hit of the band is represented. In addition to his own works, cover versions by David Bowie , Meat Puppets , Leadbelly and The Vaselines can be heard. Curt and Chris Kirkwood from the Meat Puppets were guest musicians on stage for the three songs by the Meat Puppets ( Oh, Me , Lake of Fire and Plateau ) and supported the band with guitar, bass and backing vocals.

Artwork

Robert Fisher, who had worked with Cobain on previous albums such as In Utero (1993), was responsible for the artwork for MTV Unplugged in New York . The cover picture shows a total view of the stage, the writing "NIRVANA" is shown with a horizontal color gradient from red to yellow. The two colors are also used in the fold-out booklet, which is decorated with flowers and shows photos of the musicians from the unplugged night. The artwork is printed on coarse-grain paper.

Chart successes and awards

The album was released seven months after Cobain's suicide and became a commercial success. At the 1996 Grammy Awards , the album won the " Best Alternative Music " category . The music magazine Rolling Stone selected the album in 2012 at number 313 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time .

In the USA the album was certified eight times platinum for more than eight million units sold, in the UK with triple platinum for over 900,000 units and in Switzerland with double platinum for more than 100,000 units.
