With the Lights Out (dt. By going out of the lights ) a box set is the American rock band Nirvana , consisting of three CDs and a DVD. It was released in November 2004. It consists of sparsely available recordings by the band, such as demo tapes or acoustic versions of the songs.

history

This box was supposed to appear in September 2001 for Nevermind 's 10th anniversary . Due to disagreements between the Cobain widow Courtney Love and the remaining members of Nirvana, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic , the appearance of the box has been postponed numerous times. Love wanted to release a best-of album, while Grohl and Novoselic wanted to release With the Lights Out . In the end, Love prevailed and so Nirvana appeared on October 28, 2002 with the previously unreleased song You Know You're Right, recorded in January 1994 . The dispute between the two parties continued. It took a long time to come to an agreement, so With the Lights Out was released in November 2004.

With the Lights Out is the best-selling box set of all time today.

With the Lights Out is made up of rare, unpublished records of Nirvana. You can find cover versions (e.g. Leadbellys Ain't It a Shame ), unreleased studio songs (e.g. Sappy / Verse Chorus Verse and Old Age ), B-sides (e.g. Marigold ) and Demos ( Rape Me ), many of them recorded by Cobain solo-acoustically at home (including Do Re Mi, a song that could no longer be recorded in the studio after Cobain's suicide).

The track With the Lights Out was selected by Courtney Love and comes from Nirvana's biggest hit Smells Like Teen Spirit .

Sliver - The Best of the Box

In 2005 the album Sliver - The Best of the Box was released, which consists of various demo and live versions that had previously been released on With the Lights Out . The album, named after the song of the same name, also contains unreleased demo versions of Spank Thru , Sappy and Come As You Are .

With the Lights Out entered the German charts at number 48 on December 6, 2004 and stayed in the top 100 for three weeks. Also Sliver - The Best of the Box reached on 18 November 2005 for a week position 97 of the charts.
