The Vaselines are a British rock band that achieved success especially in the second half of the 1980s. They became known through the band Nirvana , who covered the group's songs .
Band history
1986 founded guitarist Eugene Kelly and singer Frances McKee in Glasgow the formation The Vaselines ; with session musicians they recorded two singles for the independent label 53rd & 3rd . In 1989 they were joined by Eugene's brother Charlie Kelly (drums) and bassist James Sheenan; together they recorded the LP "Dum-Dum" . Musically, they are in line with the Scottish bands BMX Bandits , Teenage Fanclub or The Soup Dragons . In 1990, The Vaselines disbanded .
Although they weren't well known while the band existed, new interest was sparked by the fact that Nirvana covered several of their songs and Kurt Cobain liked to cite them as a major influence; Cobain and Courtney Love even named their daughter after Frances McKee. "Son of a Gun" and "Molly's Lips" were on Nirvana's album " Incesticide " , and "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam" can be found as "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam" on " MTV Unplugged in New York " . In 1992 two albums with old material from the Vaselines were released.
Eugene Kelly made a guest appearance with Nirvana at the 1991 Reading Festival when the US band played the Vaseline's song "Molly's Lips" .
In 1991 Eugene looked for new players and founded the band Captain America (named after the comic book hero ), which released two EPs and went on a world tour as the opening act for Nirvana . In 1992, Captain America was renamed Eugenius for legal reasons ( Marvel Comics had threatened lawsuit) . Other singles and albums, which were also not very successful commercially, followed under this name.
McKee and Sheenan founded The Painkillers after the Vaselines dissolved ; later Frances McKee was in the band Suckle . In 2006 her first solo album was released. In June 2006 she returned to London on stage with Eugene Kelly. In September 2010 the band released their second studio album, "Sex With An X" .
