Incesticide is a collection of B-sides, studio outtakes and rare songs by the American rock band Nirvana . It was released via Geffen on December 14, 1992 .

The compilation was created in collaboration between Geffen and Sub Pop, who owned a large part of the unreleased songs under license law, as most of the songs were written during their contract period until 1991.

meaning

The band opened the door to numerous bands with the album Nevermind and their hit singles (including Smells Like Teen Spirit ), heralding the musical era known as the 90s grunge rock wave. A new concept of life and the new sounds that were realized in it became accessible to a large number of people and thus mass-compatible. Nirvana, as a pioneer of this new form of cultural and political expression, was only able to present one additional album with Bleach . So it had to be an urgent concern of the record company Geffen to bind as many customers as possible to their own cultural product “Nirvana”. However, due to the global tour and promotion dates, a follow-up album could not yet be considered. Incesticide appeared for economic reasons. The album, which was pushed between Nevermind and In Utero, pursued the label's goal of securing market share and literally “keeping the fans engaged”. After all, the time was marked by new hopeful “newcomers” announced every week. Nirvana were considered to be those at the time, as were the newly signed bands from Sony Music ( Pearl Jam - Alive , Mudhoney - Let It Slide ), EMI ( Radiohead - Creep , Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm ), Atlantic Records ( Melvins - Hag Me ) or Universal Music ( Soundgarden - Spoonman ), which celebrated a no less relevant success.

production

As varied as the producers of this rarity compilation who took part in the individual songs were, the pieces represented on Incesticide , which were created over a span of 4 years, were just as varied . This includes a large part of the material produced with Jack Endino as part of the recordings for the first singles and the first album ( Sliver , Mexican Seafood , Hairspray Queen and others), a remnant of the "Nevermind" recordings ( Dive ) and others in the In the meantime accumulated songs from BBC and other sessions ( Turnaround , Been A Son , Stain and others). In terms of sound, Howie Weinberg mastered this collage into a uniform, high-quality album on a radio-friendly Nevermind level.

style

Incesticide is a cross-section of the two previously released albums. In terms of style, bulky songs like "Aero Zeppelin", "Mexican Seafood" or "Hairspray Queen" are combined on the album , which can be mentioned in the same breath as the melancholy grinding Bleach tracks. The cranked Polly (1991, Nevermind ) as a new wave version and the lively and cheerful Molly's Lips , Son Of A Gun or Turnaround , a lyrically extended cover version by Devo.

Cover

The cover shows an oil painting by Kurt Cobain. A white-gray colored bust, whose body consists only of bones, sits next to a poppy flower. A porcelain doll, whose forehead is already in two, is clinging to her right arm.

Video

A video clip was produced from the song Sliver , which ran in large rotation on the music channels. The video was shot in Cobain's former parents' house within a day and completed in two takes . It shows the band in a devastated apartment with greasy hair and puffy bags under the eyes . The single of the same name, however, was not removed from the album, but was released on Sub Pop in 1990 and was long sold out. On the B-side of this single is the song Dive .
