All Apologies is a song by the American rock band Nirvana . It was released on December 6, 1993 along with the song Rape Me and was the second single from their third studio album In Utero , which was released in September 1993.

background

Kurt Cobain wrote All Apologies in 1990, three years before the release of the fourth album In Utero , on which the song can be found. The first known versions of the song were recorded on January 1, 1991 by Craig Montgomery in Seattle. The in utero version was finally recorded in February 1993 by Steve Albini in Canon Falls, Minnesota, USA with Kera Schaly on the cello . Together with Heart-Shaped Box , the song was mixed by Scott Litt (like Pennyroyal Tea later ), as the band found the bass and vocals too quiet.

When the band was banned from shooting a music video for Rape Me by their label Geffen Records , Nirvana refused to shoot a video for All Apologies , whereupon MTV simply used the recordings from their Unplugged concert. This unplugged version appeared on Nirvana's first live album " MTV Unplugged In New York " and on her self-titled best-of album, released in 2002.

Importance and Controversy

Like many other Nirvana songs, All Apologies derives its meaning from the mood and atmosphere rather than from the lyrics.

Since some of the early studio recordings of All Apologies were very trendy, it was speculated that Cobain only wrote the piece for technical reasons. However, the final in utero version was darker and more mature in terms of text, so that such assumptions were quickly dropped. Cobain dedicated the song to his wife Courtney Love and daughter Frances Bean (at the Reading Festival 1992).
