From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah (English From the muddy banks of the Wishkah ) is the second live album by the American grunge band Nirvana . It was compiled by former bassist Krist Novoselic in memory of band leader Kurt Cobain who died in 1994 and released on October 1, 1996.

meaning

In Aberdeen , Washington , the Wishkah River flows into Grays Harbor on the sand banks of the Pacific Ocean . This is where the band formed in 1987 and began to process their shabby, expressionist impressions into music. From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah sums up these rough qualities of the band on stage and stands in contrast to the first live album ( MTV Unplugged in New York ), which, on the other hand, appears solemn, glamorous and graceful. From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah captures nirvana raw, harsh and direct. This live album is no less passionate. It reviews six years of the band's career and at the same time closes the chapter Nirvana with a dignified and loud farewell.

Emergence

Krist Novoselic and drummer Dave Grohl heard each other through hundreds of audio recordings of their careers. They pursued the goal of being able to present an "honest and real" live record, which on the one hand presents the special live feeling of the band, on the other hand simultaneously captures the various stations of the band between 1989 and 1994 and also the most meaningful recordings in sets an overall context and forms it into the most representative setlist possible. That is why the songs were not lined up in chronological order and they went back to various concerts.

The live record presents the band between Seattle and Springfield , between London and Amsterdam and in places between the smallest American clubs and the Reading Festival in Reading (England).

style

The songs are loud, harsh and typical of Nirvana. Musically characteristic is the combined change between loud and soft arrangement parts. These consist of memorable, often quite simple guitar riffs , melody-bearing bass lines and dynamic drumming. The quality of the recordings varies from simple soundboard recordings on cassette to 24-track recordings.

Cover

The cover features a collage of various live photos by Lisa Johnson, Mark Kates, Kevin Mazur and Charles Peterson. These were put together by Robert Fisher, the band's longtime graphic designer. There are more photos from Nirvana's career in the booklet, as well as a three-page liner note by Krist Novoselic:

"By presenting this record we hope to bring the ultimate fascination with Nirvana (especially Kurt) as well as the passion we had with the music we made to the fore again."
