Charles Stillman Sperry , USN , (born September 3, 1847 in Brooklyn , New York , † February 1, 1911 in Washington, DC ) was an American Rear Admiral .

Sperry graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis , Maryland in 1866 as tenth of 73 students. In November 1898 he became the commanding officer of the USS Yorktown and then served as senior officer of the South Wing of the Asia Station and president of the Naval War College . He was appointed rear admiral in the American delegation at the negotiations for the revision of the Geneva Convention in 1906 and at the second International Peace Conference in The Hague a year later.

As the commander of the Battle Fleet , he led the Great White Fleet on its journey around the world after his predecessor Rear Admiral Robley D. Evans retired due to illness .

Admiral Sperry retired on September 3, 1909, but was reactivated afterwards for special duties. He died on February 1, 1911 in Washington, DC

The destroyer USS Charles S. Sperry (DD-697) , launched in 1944 and decommissioned in 1973, was named after him.
