Terry Jacks (born March 29, 1944 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian singer and record producer .

biography

In 1968 he founded The Poppy Family with his future wife Susan Pesklevits (* 1948), from whom he divorced in 1973, which also separated in 1973. In 1969, with Which Way You Goin 'Billy? a number one hit in Canada and a number two hit on the US charts. Jacks then worked independently and worked on an album by the Beach Boys in 1972 , for which he proposed an English version of the 1961 song Le Moribond by Belgian singer Jacques Brel as Seasons in the Sun.

In 1963, lyricist Rod McKuen had translated this song into English and the Kingston Trio had recorded it. The title did not sell very well and did not make it into the US charts, but Jacks remembered it. After the Beach Boys refused to include the song on the album, Jacks rewrote it in part and published it himself in 1973. Seasons in the Sun made it to the top of the charts in the USA, Great Britain and Canada and sold millions of copies worldwide ; in the US it stayed in the charts for 15 weeks and in Canada for 17 weeks. The song also reached number one in the charts in Germany , Austria and Switzerland in German-speaking countries . The album Seasons in the Sun was far less commercially successful, it only reached number 81 in the US album charts .

Seasons in the Sun is the story of a dying young man who says goodbye to his neighbors and friends. While McKuen had tried to stay as close as possible to Brel's original, Jacks, to McKuen's displeasure, made some changes in the last stanza ( “and every time that I was down ...” ), which made the original serious ( “you cheated lots of times but then ... “ ) were detrimental, but certainly not to his disadvantage in terms of sales.

In 1973 Jacks met Jacques Brel. He suggested another recording, namely If You Go Away (Brel-Original: Ne me quitte pas ), the English text was also written by Rod McKuen, but this was only a minor success in the USA, in Great Britain the title reached number 8 in the singles charts . He lost another hit and his version of rock'n'roll (I Gave You the Best Years of My Life) , with which Kevin Johnson was successful in 1973, only hit the US charts for a week. Terry Jack's Seasons in the Sun therefore belongs to the category of one-hit wonders .

Jacks later became involved in Canada and the USA as an activist for the environmental protection organization Environmental Watch.
