Bad As Me is Tom Waits '20th studio album, released in 2011 on ANTI-Records . His first album with new material since 2004 was received largely positively by the critics. Keith Richards , Les Claypool , Marc Ribot and Flea ,among others, were involved in the recording.

background

Bad As Me , released in October 2011, was the artist's first album of new material since 2004, when Real Gone was released. In the meantime, he had only released a collection of older songs and curiosities ( Orphans , 2006) and a live album ( Glitter and Doom , 2009). Jörn Schlueter commented in the German Rolling Stone : “They were wondering whether Waits might have made it to the final round.” But “[a] nface of the new album [Bad As Me] the question no longer arises.” Waits resigned Bad As Me in advance in an ironic “private listening party” on YouTube , in which he criticized the common practice of pirated copies .

The album was the first in Waits' discography that his wife, Kathleen Brennan, was not only a co-writer but also a co-producer. His eldest son, Casey, took part in the recordings as a drummer. At Brennan's request, the songs were limited to less than 4 minutes each. Stylistically, the individual songs are very different - from the "brutal military parody" Hell Broke Luce to the ballads Kiss Me or Back in the Crowd . Several well-known "regulars" of Waits were involved in the recordings. For example Marc Ribot , Keith Richards , Flea , Les Claypool or Charlie Musselwhite .

Deluxe Edition

The double CD deluxe edition of the album was released in the form of a small book and contains three additional songs on the second CD: She Stole the Blush , Tell Me and After You Die .

reception

According to the Internet service Metacritics, the album received almost exclusively positive reviews in the press and on the Internet with an overall rating of 88. Thom Jurek from the Internet service Allmusic rated Bad As Me with 4 out of 5 possible stars and described it as “... a fast, haunting, confused one , acoustic journey full of overwhelming stops and onward journeys. "

In the German edition of Rolling Stone , Arne Willander wrote about the album:

“Nowhere on this record is there the deconstruction, the destructive work of the percussion instruments, as it had recently become almost mandatory for Waits. Scrap yard was yesterday, reconstruction is today: more beauty than horror. "

The journalist rated Bad As Me with 4 out of 5 possible stars (which corresponds to "formidable" on the Rolling Stone scale) and described Chicago and Talking at the Same Time as the best songs.

In the review by Ulf Kubanke from Internet radio laut.de , the album received the highest rating, it was praised for its music as well as for the quality of the lyrics:

“Over the years, the former 'Hobo Sapiens' seems more versatile, angry and creative than ever before. Craftsmanship weaknesses do not exist. An LP for a better world. "
