Blood Money (Tom Waits Album)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Blood Money is an album by Tom Waits released in 2002 on Epitaph Records . It contains songs that the composer wrote for Robert Wilson's Woyzeck production. The work premiered on November 21, 2000 at the Betty Nansen Theater in Copenhagen . Waits had previously contributed the compositions for the Wilson productions The Black Rider and Alice . The Woyzeck material itself had already been adapted several times in the past for music theater , including by Alban Berg for his opera Wozzeck . The album was named Blood Money because the Woyzeck is not as well known in the United States as it is in Europe.

The overall gloomy mood of the compositions, which Waits wrote mostly together with his wife Kathleen Brennan , corresponds to the frame of mind in which the title character in Georg Büchner's drama fragment Woyzeck is. This can be seen as a contrast to the album Alice , which was released at the same time and was described as rather playful , which is based on Alice in Wonderland .

The work was largely received positively by critics, for example the sensitive handling of the original and the implementation of the literary material in theater music.
