Bone Machine is the tenth regular studio album by Tom Waits . It was released on Island Records in 1992 .

background

Like the previous album Frank's Wild Years , released five years earlier, Bone Machine primarily focuses on studio sound material. The album, characterized by blues and gospel , is often referred to as Tom Waits' darkest album, not only because it revolves around moral depressions such as murder and manslaughter, but also because it comes up with rough and devastating soundscapes and percussion in the style of heavy blues rock rhythms . As far as earlier albums were regularly subject to a romantically glorified outsider image, the sixteen tracks by Bone Machine sound quite apocalyptic and authentically lost. Even ballads have a morbid - nihilistic mood, for example when the tragic story is commented on with an In a little rain never hurts someone .

Recording and production

Bone Machine was recorded and produced at the Prairie Sun Recording studios in Cotati , California . The recordings took place in Studio C , better known as "the Waits Room".

Cover picture

The cover photo is a close-up of Tom Waits. Blurred and photographed in black and white, the image that Waits depicts with a leather skullcap and overshadowed glasses looks almost animalistic. The photo is from Jesse Dylan , son of folk and rock musician Bob Dylan .

Soundtracks and covers

A number of pieces by Bone Machine have been incorporated into numerous soundtracks and copied by various artists.

• The first song on the album, Earth Died Screaming , was used in the 1995 film, 12 Monkeys .
• Jesus Gonna Be Here was used in the 2004 movie Dominoes . Tom Waits also had his own appearance in it.
• Goin 'Out West was recorded for the film Fight Club (1999).
• Goin 'Out West was covered by Queens of the Stone Age , Gomez , Widespread Panic , Gov't Mule , Richthofen , the Blacks and the Australian blues guitarist Ash Grunwald .
• I Don't Wanna Grow Up was recorded by the Ramones for their last album, Adios Amigos .
• Etta Scollo covered the same song I Don't Wanna Grow Up as an Italian version ( Crescere non mi va ) on her album Casa (2003).
• Petra Haden and Bill Frisell processed the plate for their own purposes.
• Beth Greene from the TV series The Walking Dead sang I Don't Wanna Grow Up as a kind of nursery rhyme for a newborn.
