The ČSD series M 140.0 was a two-axle railcar for express freight transport of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) . They were among the first railcars with internal combustion engines used on the ČSD rail network.

history

The construction of the first motor vehicles of domestic origin was initiated by the ČSD on a private initiative. The Goods Association in Prague ordered a motorized freight railcar from Tatra Kopřivnice . The second railcar was bought by Lidove Noviny in Brno . Both cars came into the ownership of ČSD around 1928.

The two vehicles, known as goods trolleys , were owned by a foreign organization. Nevertheless, the ČSD provided staff and carried out maintenance right from the start. Both cars were used for the fast transport of printed matter from large cities to the surrounding area. The tariff advantages and the fast connection of the railroad and the operational advantages of the motor vehicle were used.

Both cars were parked during the Second World War . After the war, they were used as official vehicles for some time. The M 140.002 was retired in 1945, the M 140.001 in 1953. One vehicle has not been preserved.

technical features

In essence, the vehicles were an automobile on railway wheels. They only had a driver's cab on one side and there was no possibility of changing direction as with the later M 140.1 . It is not known to what extent the vehicles could turn.

They were powered by a four-cylinder Tatra petrol engine, as had already proven itself several times in trucks. The essence of the engines was the maximum speed of 1800 revolutions / minute. The power was transmitted from a mechanical four-speed gearbox from the automotive industry with sliding wheels.
