Strange little girls

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Strange Little Girls is the sixth album by Tori Amos . It was released on September 18, 2001 and was produced by herself in her "home studio" in Cornwall, England, and most of it was recorded there. Due to a falling out with the record company Atlantic Records , she did not want to contribute her own songs before moving to Epic Records . The result was a purely concept album in which only songs from a male pen are covered. The specialty is the female perspective, which Tori Amos brings to the respective songs. Accordingly, the songs are rather “top-heavy” and stand in contrast to their passionately performed versions of, for example, Losing My Religion ( REM ) or Smells Like Teen Spirit ( Nirvana ). In interviews she liked to talk about the “power of the word”, which she wanted to express on this album. The concept also includes the elaborate artwork of the album: Each song is illustrated by a photo, on which Amos interprets the content of the songs through clothing and presentation. Underneath there is a corresponding sentence by Neil Gaiman .

During the corresponding tour ("Strange Little Tour") usually only three songs from the album were played per evening. The concerts were always opened with 97 Bonnie & Clyde . In addition, I Don't Like Mondays , Time and Rattlesnakes managed to be played quite often. Since 2003 Tori Amos has rarely played songs by Strange Little Girls .

The single Strange Little Girl had to be withdrawn from circulation due to a copyright infringement on the single cover and was not reissued.

The album reached number 4 on the Billboard charts in the United States .
