Daylight in Your Eyes is the debut single by the pop group No Angels . The song was written by the two American musicians Tony Bruno and Tommy Byrne and was originally sung by various artists and recorded by the Colombian singer Victoria Faiella. In February 2001 the title was published by the five-piece band after their formation as part of the casting show Popstars .

After it was released, the song became an international hit and reached first place in the German , Austrian , Swiss , Estonian and Brazilian charts. After only 24 hours, Daylight was sold over 500,000 times in Germany and is therefore one of the fastest-selling songs in German music history after Elton John's Candle in the Wind '97 and Bro'Sis ' I Believe . The song received a platinum record in Germany and Austria and a gold record in Switzerland . Daylight in Your Eyes also took first place in the 2001 German annual charts . In addition, the No Angels in German-speaking countries were nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award and received the echo for the best national single - rock / pop .

A complete success commercially in German-speaking Europe, the title was released in the United Kingdom , the USA and France that same year. Here, however, the song met with little response and only reached low chart positions. Thereupon the band refrained from further publications in these countries.

background

Daylight in Your Eyes was written by the two American musicians Tony Bruno and Tommy Byrne and was originally intended for the debut album of the rock band New Life Crisis. Her version of the song, recorded in 2000, was released in early 2001 by Tommy Boy Records on various promo records and compilations in North America, but never received an official single release after Bruno and Byrne acquired the exploitation rights in Europe after the song was completed by the company had sold musical performance and mechanical reproduction rights (GEMA) and thus legal licensing reasons blocked the international publication of Daylight . Tommy Boy Records and New Life Crisis separated a little later and the already produced album remained unreleased.

At GEMA, the song was also acquired in 2000 by the record company Sony Music for the New York singer Victoria Faiella. Faiella, a former background singer of Colombian origin , met Tony Bruno in 1999 on Enrique Iglesias ' world tour Cosas del Amor , where he was the head of the backing band. After all, it was Bruno who introduced Faiella to a concert with the German musician Peter Plate ( Rosenstolz ) and thus laid the foundation for joint musical projects. A little later, Faiella signed an artist contract with Polydor under Plate's direction and began recording her debut album Drama in the studio . Together with Ulf Leo Sommer , Plate created a new, more poppy version of Bruno's Daylight , which was sung by Faiella and released in July 2000 as her debut single. However, both the single and the accompanying music video received little airplay on radio stations and music channels and the record company then withdrew the planned release of drama .

When Plate was made aware that the production company Tresor TV was looking for a winning title for the winning band of their RTL II casting show Popstars , the musician offered the flopped song for recycling. Polydor eventually took over the rights to the song, which was later sung by the newly formed girl group No Angels for their debut album Elle'ments (2001). However, the production of the new setting, which was ultimately renamed Daylight in Your Eyes , was done by Thorsten Brötzmann, who was essentially based on the arrangement for Victoria Faiella's version produced by Plate & Sommer .

Music video

The original music video for Daylight in Your Eyes was made before the official announcement of the later band to the exclusion of the press. The shooting of the video, the making of of which was documented as part of later Popstars episodes, took place on December 22nd, 2000 in the X-Sight studios in Groß-Gerau , Hesse . Responsible for producing safe TV the Camelot film production , the co-owner and founder Robert Bröllochs also took over the direction of the video. As a choreographer accompanied Popstars -Coach Detlef D! Soost the singers during the shooting, which lasted around seventeen hours.

In terms of content, Daylight in Your Eyes is a pure performance video without an integrated storyline. All shots were filmed in the blue box without an elaborate backdrop , with the key color being replaced by individual animations in post-production . Only Mölling's individual shots were taken in front of the green screen , as otherwise the images projected onto the background would have been seen in her blue eyes and blonde hair if the blue screen technology had been used. The finished clip is composed of rhythmically adapted cutting sequences of a large number of different close-ups of the individual group members as well as full-shot settings and synchronous dance interludes in group formation. Daylight in Your Eyes is also used in picture-in-picture techniques and rotating split-screen processes .

Visually, the video is largely based on the early image strategy of the band, whose management, based on the title of the accompanying debut album Elle'ments, assigned one of the four basic elements to each of the five women . The setting and styling of the album campaign as well as the video for “Daylight in Your Eyes” were shaped by archetypal ideas of the respective essences: Benaissa symbolized air in animations of wind and fog , Petruo wore brown colors and animal prints as earth , Mölling received as Streaks of blue water and Diakovska embodied fire , visually illustrated by her fiery red hair and flaming picture backgrounds. In order to be able to assign an element to Wahls as the fifth member, a fifth element was quickly invented : Spirit , which optically found itself in esoteric and traditional details.

The full-length video was first seen in an episode of Pop Stars in January 2001. With the band, the finished product received mixed reviews. Benaissa later jokingly stated that the “glitter sequins and carnival make-up looks” in the video made the quintet look like “five casted hookers ”. Since there was fear of censorship in the original video due to tight outfits, another music video was produced for Daylight in Your Eyes especially for the American market . The shooting of this took place in the summer of 2001, the Canadian Toronto instead. Directed by Stephen Scott .
