Now ... Us! When the Angels Swing Pure

When the Angels Swing is an album by the German pop band No Angels . It was released in November 2002 and reached number 9 in the German album charts . For this album different tracks from the albums Elle'ments and Now… Us! interpreted and rearranged in the style of swing .

background

On October 2, 2002, the No Angels performed in front of about 300 invited guests at a concert in the Tränenpalast on Friedrichstrasse in Berlin . The group was accompanied by a 24-strong big band , including well-known jazz musicians such as Wolfgang Haffner , Axel Schlosser and Torsten Maaß . The concert was arranged by jazz trumpeter and composer Till Brönner . The small-scale event was recorded and released on December 2, 2002 as a live DVD , also under the title When the Angels Swing . On April 24, 2004, the ZDF recording of the concert was broadcast on television as part of the ZDF in concert series.

After the concert, Till Brönner produced the album. The production followed the trend set in 2001 by Robbie Williams with the successful album Swing When You're Winning and continued by Paul Anka with Rock Swings . In contrast to Williams, who interpreted jazz classics from the 1940s, the No Angels presented their own tracks in swing arrangements for big band orchestration.

When the Angels Swing could not follow on from the great success of the first two album releases. It was the No Angels' first album that was not positioned at the top of the sales charts. Nevertheless, on February 4, 2003, When the Angels Swing won the group the Golden Camera media award in the Pop National category.

music

Stylistically, the production can be seen as an example of how differently music can be interpreted. Accompanied by the typical big band style, with clear accents on trumpet, saxophone and violin, a new, clearly positioned swing sound is created from familiar tracks. The hit Daylight in Your Eyes is not immediately recognizable in the new arrangement, here the swing elements clearly come to the fore. In contrast, there are the tracks Like Ice in the Sunshine and There Must Be an Angel , where the arrangement is not too far removed from the original. The interpretation of Something about Us can be stylistically assigned to the samba music style due to the selected rhythm . This also applies to the track Now That We Found Love with typical percussion elements. With the singing and music from When the Angels Swing , the singers can reach their target group from conventional pop music as well as swing fans.

single

The single All Cried Out was released on December 2, 2002 in a swing and a pop version. The title reached number 18 in the German single charts. The pop song All Cried Out was originally published by Alison Moyet and interpreted as a cover version by the No Angels . The title was not performed at the concert in Berlin, but the accompanying video is included as a bonus in the DVD edition.

Interpreted as a ballad by Alison Moyet, the pop version of the No Angels differs through the strong influence of electronic elements. The song seems faster overall. The swing version presents itself stylistically in the typical big band sound. In addition, the single contains an extended version, which apart from the length does not differ significantly from the pop version. As a bonus, the single contains the dance track Funky Dance .

Reviews

  • Dorothee von Peterffy for laut.de : “If you want to compare it to Robbie's swing album, the No Angels lag far behind. That may be because their pop songs, which are very much tied to the present day, simply don't want to fit into the swing dress. A success like that of Williams was unlikely to happen. "
  • Review on brainstorms42.de: “Not so long ago Robbie Williams signed the most valuable record deal in history. The No Angels are still miles away from that, but they too dare to release a swing album. The album offers 14 songs. And with the exception of “Daylight”, which at times sounds forced, one gets the impression that something is being made to fit here that doesn't fit, it's a really great album that will find its place under the Christmas tree. "
  • ProSieben review: “Whether with trumpets, saxophone, violins, guitars, bangs or the piano - their actually well-known sound becomes completely new and the horizon opens up. Even if you have no idea, or rather, no interest in the big band style: you should give the CD a chance - because jazz, blues and swing find a new definition here. "
