Torsten Maaß

Torsten Maaß (born September 3, 1967 ) is a German modern jazz trumpeter as well as composer and arranger.

Live and act

Maass was taught the trumpet from the age of six. He gained his first musical experience in the jazz band Stormarn Jazzing Kids, which he co-founded, as well as in various wind and school orchestras. During the next few years he played in the Ahrensburg Youth Orchestra, the Hamburg State Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra , the German Jazz Orchestra , the Downtown Big Band Hamburg and the Big Band of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival . In 1986 he passed his Abitur at the Stormarn School . After studying classical music at the University of Music in Lübeck up to a diploma in trumpet with Hannes Läubin in 1991, he completed the jazz course at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater with Lennart Axelsson and Johannes Faber . He played in musicals and was hired by the NDR Big Band , the RIAS Big Band Berlin and the hr Big Band . He was also a member of the Ed Partyka Jazz Orchestra, Jeff Cascaros Enterprise Big Band and the Thilo Wolf Big Band. He is currently a trumpeter in Bob Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra .

Between 1994 and 2006 he accompanied Udo Jürgens in the Pepe Lienhard orchestra on five tours, where he wrote all orchestral arrangements for the 2003/2004 and 2006 tours. As a guest band leader and soloist with his own big band repertoire, he was invited by the Concert Jazz Orchestra Vienna and the Oslo Workshop Big Band . As a composer and arranger, he also wrote for musicians such as Bill Ramsey , Clark Terry , Monty Alexander , Eddie Daniels , Joe Gallardo , Pee Wee Ellis , Silvia Droste , Tom Gäbel , Marjorie Barnes and Thomas Quasthoff and for ensembles such as Bujazzo, Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm Combination & Brass , the SWR Big Band , the Bundeswehr Big Band and various TV shows in Germany (e.g. Let's Dance ), Austria and Switzerland. His compositions and arrangements were recorded by Quintonic Brass ( Carnival of the Animals and others , Till Eulenspiegel and even more pranks ), as well as by DePhazz with the hr big band ( Big ) and by No Angels ( When the Angels Swing ). He also wrote for Gustav Bosse Verlag ( jazz in choir ). He publishes his compositions and arrangements for big band and brass ensembles in his own publishing house wonderbrass music & products .
