The Sopron County (Hungarian vármegye Sopron ; Latin comitatus Soproniensis ) was a historic administrative unit (county / county) in the Kingdom of Hungary .
The area is in what is now western Hungary and in the eastern parts of Austria (in what is now Burgenland ).
location
The county bordered on the Austrian crown land of Lower Austria and the Hungarian counties of Wieselburg (Moson) , Raab (Győr) , Wesprim (Veszprém) and Eisenburg (Vas) . Lake Neusiedl was in the middle and northern part of the county .
history
The county was established in the 11th century and existed in this form until 1918. The western part was part of Burgenland in Austria , which was officially established in 1921 , while the eastern part remained with Hungary. The city of Ödenburg (Hungarian: Sopron), originally awarded to Austria , came to Hungary after a referendum. Due to the major county reform in 1950, the greatly reduced county was added to Győr-Moson county , a small part was added to Vas county .
