Blaufränkischland is a marketing name for the Mittelburgenland wine-growing region in the Oberpullendorf district in Burgenland . The Blaufränkisch grape variety is primarily grown in the region. The term is not defined by the wine law.

geography

The vineyards of the region extend over an area of 2,000 hectares from the southern foothills of the Ödenburg Mountains to the Günser Bergland . The Hungarian lowlands border on the area to the east. The loamy soils are ideal for this grape variety .

Only on these soils does the wine show its deep sour cherry aromas and reflect the area. The winemakers of the Blaufränkischland-Mittelburgenland vinify three types of wine in their cellars , namely "classic" - red wines aged in stainless steel tanks or large wooden barrels, " barriques " - red wines stored in small oak barrels and " cuvées " - in which the Blaufränkisch variety is an essential component.

history

Viticulture in the Blaufränkischland can be traced back to the Celtic times. Viticulture reached its peak in Roman times when the area was incorporated into the province of Pannonia . After setbacks at the time of the Great Migration, another heyday began in the 14th century. The Turkish wars in the 16th and 17th centuries hit viticulture hard. After an intermediate high , phylloxera destroyed the area's vineyards , as it did in all of Europe . At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, the main variety began to gain popularity.

Communities

The Blaufränkisch is mainly found in the wine towns of Deutschkreutz , Horitschon , Neckenmarkt , Lutzmannsburg , Raiding , Unterpetersdorf and Großwarasdorf .
