Mountain church hl. John the Baptist

The Roman Catholic Stoober Bergkirche stands in the middle to the east of the long street village of Stoob in Burgenland on a hill in a dominant position.

history

To the east of the village there was a Roman settlement on the Gaberlingbach. A fortified place with a tower is assumed as a precursor at the site of the church. The small church was built in the 13th century and dedicated to the patronage of John the Baptist .

In the years 1956 to 1959 a new parish church was built in the village away from the main street . A bell from the mountain church with the year 1535 was transferred there.

description

The mountain church is a Romanesque rectangular building without a church tower with a semicircular apse and exposed wooden ceiling. The three-axis west gallery has a wooden parapet. In the years 1970 to 1975 the church was renovated. Wall painting remains of Christ in the mandorla and John the Baptist with the Evangelists from the years 1220 to 1230 were uncovered in the apse. On the southern outer wall are the figures of the crucified and the two thieves , made in 1891 as a work from Val Gardena.
