Ludwig von Dóczi

Ludwig von Dóczi , Hungarian Lajos Dóczi , born as Ludwig Dux , also Louis Dux (born November 29, 1845 in Sopron ; † August 28, 1918 in Budapest ) was an Austro-Hungarian poet, journalist and politician of Jewish origin.

Life

Dóczi's father Adolf Dux was a wine merchant and should not be confused with the poet Adolf Dux of the same name .

After finishing school he studied law in Vienna. There he wrote for Die Presse . His articles, in which he campaigned for the settlement of 1867 between Austria and Hungary, met with approval. On the recommendation of the then Justice Minister Balthasar Horváth , he became a civil servant in the Prime Minister's office in 1868 . When Gyula Andrássy became Foreign Minister in 1872, Dóczi accompanied him to Vienna and was first appointed Section Councilor and later Hofrat in the Foreign Ministry. In 1889 he was awarded the title of baron . In 1902 he retired from public life. He lived in Deutschkreutz and Budapest. Dóczi was a Christian convert.

Literary work

Dóczi's reputation did not come from his administrative career, but from his work as a playwright and translator. His best-known comedy Csók ( The Kiss ) was played in Hungarian and German theaters ( kk Hof- und Burgtheater on February 27, 1877) and won the Prize of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1871 . Dóczi translated it into German himself.

He also translated Hippolyt August Schaufert's comedy Schach dem König in 1873, wrote the libretto for Karl Goldmark's opera Merlin and Johann Strauss ' knight Pásmán .

His translation of Goethe's Faust into Hungarian and his German translation of Imre Madáchs by the Faust- inspired Az ember tragédiája (German: Die Tragödie des Menschen ) became universally famous. His collected lyrical work was published in 1890. His last work was the translation of Schiller's poems into Hungarian.
