Anton Berger (politician)

Anton Berger (born May 17, 1928 in Baumgarten , Burgenland ; † August 17, 1986 in Oberpullendorf , Burgenland) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ).

Life

After attending elementary school in Baumgarten and secondary school in Wiener Neustadt , Anton Berger started his apprenticeship and was trained as a businessman in Frauenkirchen and Eisenstadt . In 1952 he started his own business and in 1957 opened a department store in Deutschkreutz .

Only a year later, in 1958, Berger also went into politics when he was elected to the municipal council of Deutschkreutz for the SPÖ . After seven years, he was elected vice mayor in 1965 and appointed mayor of his home municipality in 1972. As mayor, Berger invested a lot in the infrastructure of Deutschkreutz; under his leadership the construction of a central office building with post office , gendarmerie and tobacco shop was carried out. He also created town twinning with Harka in Hungary and Wetter in Germany . In 1985 he resigned from his position as mayor.

In January 1974, Berger was sworn in in Vienna as a member of the Federal Council, to which, apart from a five-day break, he was to be a member for eleven years in December 1974, until his death. In the second half of 1982 Berger also acted as President of the Federal Council .

Anton Berger was only 58 years old. He died unexpectedly in August 1986.
