The first films from the 1980s and 1990s were made at the interface between experimental film, actions in public space, performance of lesbian and queer sexuality. The early important works contributed significantly to the development of conceptual art in Austria. The Austrian transgender artist deals with the libido of the economy. Gender is an artistic theme at Scheirl. Scheirl's work is about gender identity , which she perceives as fragile. Her artistic change from film to painting was accompanied by a physical metamorphosis of her own physique . Her female body became male through testosterone injections. Encouraged by the artistic successes of the metamorphosis, she emancipated herself again from her gender identification and became a woman again. For Scheirl, art is a field of experimentation for life and its changes.

documenta 14 contribution Kassel, Athens

The transgender artist was represented in Athens with a series of paintings that made use of a shattered surrealistic formal language.

In the Neue Galerie in Kassel Scheirl showed the picture Glorious Restraint from the Painters Parody series from 2016 and three videos from the TV Drawings series from 1980 to 1981. The three videos show a performance. The artist pierces a canvas. Scheirl regards the videos as a footnote to her painting.

Quote

"Interpersonal action is based, among other things, on intrapersonal competencies and always acts out its relationship to death, loss and becoming."
