Franz, a young bricklayer from the village of Raiding (Burgenland) works in a construction company in the region. In the local inn, he lets himself be lured away by a major construction company from Vienna and becomes a commuter. His fiancée Erna is expecting a child. His parents have been saving on one building site for years. But the young farmer, a hated rival for Franz, sells the promised land to the village doctor. While taking a walk, his fiancée Erna injured her head, Franz desperately tries to find the village doctor, who is currently with the builder, from whom Franz was poached. There were fistfights and Franz injured the builder, who reported Franz and subsequently there was a legal proceeding. On his construction site in Vienna, Franz illegally takes cement and other materials for his house with him. This incident also comes to light and Franz is reported for it. Franz finds himself increasingly in an outsider position in the village.

The house that the farmer's son and construction worker Franz wants to build for himself and his pregnant wife Erna will never be finished. Because trying to break out of the dull milieu of his village origins and to work in the city for more wages, he breaks. At the first glimpse into a ruthless, profit-greedy environment, this naive day laborer is both seeing and cracked at. When he now wants to take his rights and also bring his little sheep dry, he becomes a criminal offender. He hangs himself in his prison cell.
