A foreigner is on the run through Austria. Nana Iaschwili (Birgit Doll), a citizen of the former Soviet Union, lands at Vienna Airport. Her actual travel destination is the United States , but her onward flight is refused because her visa for America is forged. Nana is arrested. Before she can be deported to her homeland, she manages to escape. As a supposed tourist, she travels illegally through Austria for five days, changing companions, means of transport and whereabouts. On her escape, a shy summer visitor (August Zirner) comes to her aid. When Nana's mug shot is published and she loses luggage and money due to inattention, Nana wants to go into hiding in Germany. In the company of a fugitive bank robber (Karl Ferdinand Kratzl) she reaches the green border , no man's land between Austria and Germany. The illegal border crossing fails and Nana finds shelter with a hut keeper (Wolfram Berger), who likes to keep her with him. But Nana has other plans.
