action

The story begins in 1937 and takes place between Vienna and Berlin. The actress Carola Hell is at the beginning of a promising career. She loves the assimilated Jewish writer Martin Hoffmann and moves into an apartment with him. Despite the political changes, the two believe that they can live their love in an apolitical private sphere. On the occasion of an appearance in Berlin, Hell made his first experiences with the Gestapo . Since she did not answer at the agreed time, Hoffmann wanted to travel to Berlin despite warnings from friends, but was taken from the train and searched on the way.

Back in Vienna, the two of them see the worsening situation on the streets and in the reactions of the anti-Semitic caretaker, fellow actors or the housekeeper whose socialist husband is imprisoned. The housekeeper remembers the February fighting in 1934 and offers Hoffmann shelter in her community apartment in the event of an emergency. The Anschluss of Austria is complete, and Hell informs Hoffmann that she is pregnant. Together they try to get to Prague by train, but Hoffmann is taken from the crowd at the station while she manages to escape. When he tries to accept the housekeeper’s offer, she rejects him because her son is a Nazi and that would not go well. A taxi driver promised Hoffmann to take him to the border the next day, but the Gestapo checked Hoffmann that same night on the way home.

Reviews

“The attempt to come to terms with a dark chapter in German-Austrian history is at best noteworthy because of its topic - worth discussing,” wrote the lexicon of international films . The verdict of the TV magazine Prisma was: "Unfortunately, the result offers well-tended boredom with nostalgic images and an often annoying moral."

Dietrich Kuhlbrodt's criticism in epd-film 6/87 was not very positive either: “Director Wolfgang Glück ( Der Schüler Gerber ) filmed the book“ Also that was Vienna ”by Torberg, resulting in a never-ending flood of dialogues on Basic German is taken care of. [...] A nostalgic fashion show from A to Z. [...] But then it goes straight back to the Kammerspiel, that is, on the heads of the lovers who take turns reciting one Torberg sentence after the other. Since the actors have very limited means of expression, it is better not to look. But that is also not necessary, since the film dramaturgy is exhausted in radio play technology anyway. 38 is a school radio program. "

Quotes

  • "In times when what had long been believed to be overcome reappears, the past has not been mastered even 50 years later, should be kept silent again: In times like this, such a film cannot be too much." ( Wolfgang Glück )

Awards

The film was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign Language Film in 1987 , but had to admit defeat to the film The Attack by Dutch filmmaker Fons Rademakers .
