action

Summer, in the Austrian province: Mati is about to take her Matura exam . She lives with her father Paul, a building surveyor, and her mother Gabi, a veterinarian, in a luxurious single-family home that is still under construction. After graduating from high school, Mati will go to Vienna and study veterinary medicine like her mother . In her free time, she helps out in the mother’s veterinary practice and loves to hang out with boys. She competes against them in motocross races in a quarry, including Sebi, the son of the local dairy farmer Grexi. Mati and Sebi grew up together and Sebi is secretly in love with them. At the same time, he secretly deals in drugs and both spend exuberant nights with their friends at the local disco.

When Mati and Sebi and their friends harass a classmate, a former ex-girlfriend of a clique member, on the way home, Carla unexpectedly helps her. Mati is immediately fascinated by the tough girl, who is a few years older. Carla lives alone and works in the local supermarket in order to get her high school diploma. A little later, by chance, they meet again when Carla brings her cat to the vet's office. They both become friends, use drugs and spend a lot of time together. Mati soon feels more for Carla. To the annoyance of the mother, Mati begins to question her planned professional future.

Meanwhile, the marriage of Mati's parents begins to run into turmoil. Father Paul secretly longs for sex with men and lives out his first erotic fantasies with a squash partner in the fitness center. When Mati's mother Gabi finds out by chance, she keeps the discovery to herself. She begins to question her marriage and has sex with Grexi, Sebi's father.

Paul, in turn, who cannot admit his homosexuality, meets the younger Andi at work. He accepts his invitation to a nightly party at the lake with other gay friends. When they both swim to a distant island, Andi does not respond to Paul's advances because he does not want to do anything with men who have not come out. Paul remains disappointed on the island and is only brought back by boat after hours by Andi and a friend.

Mati leaves Sebi's advances unanswered. When he notices that Mati has spent the night with Carla instead of studying at home for the high school graduation as prescribed, he reacts jealously. He then becomes hostile towards Mati and incites the clique to take Mati to the supermarket, where Carla works. There Sebi deliberately drops alcohol bottles and asks Mati to do the same. Under pressure from Sebi and two other clique members, Mati cannot confess to Carla and destroys numerous alcohol bottles. Carla then wants to end the close friendship with Mati. She is changed by Mati when she stands in front of her house at night and asks to be admitted.

Hours later, the disappointed Sebi tries to break into Carla's house with his friends after a night at the disco. Frightened, Mati and Carla flee into the forest and seek protection in a cave. The next morning Paul returns to his wife. He starts crying in bed and is comforted by his wife. Mati is writing her Matura exam and is the first to submit her thesis.

Film title and subject

L'Animale , the title of the film, refers to the song of the same name by the Italian singer Franco Battiato from 1985. Mückstein overheard L'Animale , which she was familiar with, while working on the script. It struck her that her characters could sing this song too, as it sings about the central theme of the film. “Battiato sings about the animal in itself, but does not regard it as something driven by instinct, but rather as something intuitive, something completely authentic that cannot be disguised. He also casts an ironic look at the animal because it constantly wants something that it doesn't want or shouldn't want. At the same time, he knows that the animal will always prevail in the end, ”says Mückstein.

Battiato's song is used directly on the crucial night before Matis Matura. Mati, her parents, Sebi and Carla start singing along at the moment when everyone can let themselves go. Mückstein did not want to use the music manipulatively.

occupation

Mückstein with Sophie Stockinger and other actors (2019)

Mückstein wrote the main role of 18-year-old Mati especially for Sophie Stockinger , who was prepared for the role with physical training, dialect coaching and moped training. Stockinger said: “The challenge is also that the role is very far away from myself as a person. Of course there are little things in common or things that you know from your own life, but the basic traits are very different. "

Lukas Johne plays Hannes, Lisa-Caroline Nemec took over the role of Lisa, Dominic Marcus Singer plays Kogler and Marcel Wegscheider plays Fabian. Filming

Part of the production team (2019)
Sound design: Hjalti Bager-Jonathansson

The shooting took place from July 8th to September 23rd, 2016, among others in the Austrian capital Vienna . The locations in Lower Austria, where the film was shot in September 2016, include a farm in Gablitz and a house in Pressbaum , both municipalities border on the municipality of Purkersdorf . In Pressbaum, a modern house that was almost finished was chosen as Mati's parents' home. Regarding the choice of filming locations in Lower Austria, Mückstein explains: “Places also radiate something between the lines, you can feel whether it is near a city or very far away. Here it was important to tell about the outlets of the bacon belt, where the young people have an idea of the city but don't regularly come to where you have many new influences. "
