Wolfram Paulus (born August 12, 1957 in Grossarl ; † May 28, 2020 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Paulus studied from 1977 to 1982 at the University of Television and Film in Munich . After doing community service at Salzburger Lebenshilfe, he made his first film with Heidenlöcher , which was shown as an Austrian contribution to the 1986 Berlin Film Festival .

Paul preferred to work with amateur actors . His early films are regarded as pioneers of the New Austrian Film and are characterized by a close look at topics such as home, religion, tourism and childhood or, as in Heidenlöcher for example, drastically demonstrate the oppressive attitude towards life in World War II . An empathic approach to the respective main characters in his stories - Paulus wrote the scripts and edited his films himself - is reinforced by means of a sophisticated sound and editing. The first three films by Paulus are in the Edition Österreichischer Film . Bert Breit or Peter Valentin often wrote the film music.

A retrospective planned for March 2020 in the Filmarchiv Austria in the Metro-Kino Wien could not take place due to the Corona crisis (COVID-19) and will instead take place in the online channel of the Filmarchiv.

Paul died in May 2020 at the age of 62 in Salzburg as a result of cancer.
