occupation

Heidenlöcher is a German - Austrian war film drama by Wolfram Paulus from 1986. The black and white film was shown as an Austrian entry in the 1986 Berlinale competition program .

action

During the Second World War, the deserter Santner has been hiding for two years in the caves of a lonely Salzburg mountain valley near a mountain village, which the locals call Heidenlöcher . Santner is supplied with food by his wife and the farmer Dürlinger. But the Gestapo and the local police are hot on the heels of the fugitive. After Dürlinger slapped his son Ruap in the presence of the Polish prisoner of war Jacek, Ruap wants to reveal Santner's hiding place.

Movie title

Wolfram Paulus took up the life story of Santner Sepp, who hid on mountain pastures and in caves during the war years. The Heidenlöcher, which gave the film its name, was not brought into the picture, because Santner had never sought refuge there. The inaccessible rock holes and caves in the steep face high above the Liechtenstein Gorge opposite the Alte Wacht at the entrance to the Grossarl Valley have been known since ancient times and are called Heidenlöcher. Anna Paulus, the director's mother, provided an explanation in her memoirs published in 1996: Your son liked the mystique of the name, which is why he decided on the title.
