Editta Braun (born May 25, 1958 in Vöcklabruck , Austria ) is an Austrian choreographer, stage dancer, dance teacher and founder and director of the Salzburg dance company editta braun company .

Life

Editta Braun was born as the youngest of four children of Margarethe and Martin Braun in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut. At the age of six she received lessons in classical ballet and piano and trained intensively in artistic gymnastics (Upper Austrian state champion among young female gymnasts in 1974).

From 1976 to 1982 she studied sports science and German at the University of Salzburg , became involved in student politics and completed her studies with work on the subjects of “Sport at alternative schools” and “Art is lamenting, doubting everything that is beyond question - Maria Erlenberger's work from a feminist perspective ”. In 1983 she began her dance training: in Paris mainly in the École Peter Goss and in New York in the Studio Eleo Pomare. She also shaped her dance lessons with Cristina Caprioli, Sônia Mota and Germaine Acogny as well as acting lessons (method acting) with Walter Lott. Stylistically she was also influenced by a dance project initiated by SZENE Salzburg with Wim Vandekeybus , where she learned to combine her artistic gymnastics with contemporary, sporty dance.

The impulse to turn to contemporary dance came from an encounter with the work of Pina Bausch at a performance in Vienna in 1980.

Artistic career

2009, Offside, editta braun company

In 1982 Editta Braun founded the “collective processes” together with Beda Percht, which in 1986 won the internationally coveted choreography award from Bagnolet with Lufus (ex equo with Saburo Teshigawara).

In 1989 she founded the editta braun company in Salzburg , with which she has worked on at least one full-length dance piece every year and toured internationally. Her dance pieces have been or are performed in numerous countries in Europe, Africa and Asia at renowned festivals and have won numerous awards.

Braun worked early on in the field of dance film adaptation. a. with Othmar Schmiderer , Wolfram Paulus and Hannes Klein. Her most successful film is "Collision", made in 1993 under the direction of Othmar Schmiderers. The short film was awarded a bronze medal at the New York Film Festival in 1995.

Teaching

Editta Braun has been teaching acrobatic-gymnastics and gymnastic-dance forms of movement at the inter-faculty department for sports and movement sciences at the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg and, since 1997, contemporary dance, physical theater and choreography at the Institute for Dance Arts at Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz (Austria) , Improvisation and professional strategies.

From 1992 to 1997 she worked as a lecturer at ImPulsTanz Vienna (formerly International Dance Weeks Vienna) and from 1994 to 1997 as a commissioned choreographer for the ballet school of the Vienna State Opera . In 2006 she was in charge of the youth project “wintertime” at the Festspielhaus St. Pölten .

As part of her teaching activities, Editta Braun developed a specific improvisation technique in which acting and contemporary dance are combined to form "physical theater".

Style and way of working

2001, Luvos vol. 2, editta braun company

Editta Braun's dance pieces have an expressive, theatrical style that gives them an unmistakable character. Humor and pathos are often close together, always interwoven with a decidedly socially critical commitment.

The special style of Editta Braun's dance theater pieces also results from the choreographer's special way of working in the creative process:

Editta Braun is a dancer, choreographer, artist, may be a “grande dame”, maybe also a “wild bumblebee”, as others say ... but above all else she is a person. As a person, she works with people and for people. What sounds banal is essential. Is central for you, for your creative work and for the results of this work. Humanity is the essence of their work and shapes the result, which - quite humanly - is never finished, never really "result" and thus an object, but always in the process of becoming, a project.

The close cooperation with composers, live musicians and artists outside Austria is characteristic of Editta Braun's creative work. The collaboration with the French dancer and choreographer Jean-Yves Ginoux, with the Egyptian director Mahmoud Aboudoma and with the legendary Jean Babilée was particularly influential . With him in 1993/94 in Paris and Salzburg, the dance theater piece "La vie, c'est contagieux" was created:

Lots of small lamps, a comfortable sofa and a composition of honest lampshades on the stage. Nothing else but a father confronted with the various stages of his daughter. First the 13-year-old, playful, spirited, individual, but walking in his steps - arm in arm. Then the 22-year-old, growing up. Strong but not independent. The first love, like the following, is shaped by the father figure. Still with the 33-year-old.

Since 1996, the creation of her pieces has been closely linked to the music of the composer and musician Thierry Zaboitzeff , with whom she also lives.

One of the internationally most successful productions and generally one of the most frequently performed pieces is Luvos, vol.2 . The "long-running hit" (Ditta Rudle 2008) emerged as a further development of the play Lufus (see above) in 2001 in Salzburg and with this established a series of innovative, purely female body illusion theater from now six pieces by Editta Braun, which also includes planet LUVOS (2012), Close Up (2015) or Close Up 2.0 (2017) and Fanghoumé (2019). In this series, Editta Braun and her company conduct continuous research into visually overcoming body boundaries. (see editta braun company : the "Luvos" series)

Socially critical and ecological commitment

Born out of a creative and at the same time critical impulse of the eighties, which continues to this day, Editta Braun's artistic work has always been decidedly political. Pieces like Voyage à Napoli , Luvos, vol. 2 , King Arthur or currently residing in made this clear in the choice of topics. no more art with text contributions and a. by Kurt Palm and Christian Felber in 2011 painfully questioned the meaning of artistic creation in the face of hunger, war, environmental destruction, species extinction and growing inequality.

Braun's political approach is also reflected in a decidedly intercultural production method: the choreographer repeatedly developed socially committed projects, especially in Asia and Africa, with local artists and confronted their cultural, historical and social identity with Central European traditions. The pieces thus created include India (1998 in Bangalore and Salzburg), manifest (2002 in Senegal and Salzburg) and Coppercity 1001 (2007/08 in Alexandria / Egypt and Salzburg).
