action

The film tells the story of a group of Slovak Roma living in Vienna who earn their living by begging. The 17-year-old Roma Pepe, whose father has died, lives with his despotic uncle Robert Horváth, known as "Rocky", in a dilapidated house on the outskirts of Vienna. Patron Rocky tyrannized his own clan, including his girlfriend Terezka he on the line sends. To earn money for his family, Pepe goes begging with others every day.

One day 16-year-old Marcela appears and joins the group. She comes from their home village in Eastern Slovakia and is supposed to work off her father's debts under Rocky. Pepe is supposed to take care of her and begins to roam the city with her. Pepe and Marcela begin to fall in love with each other. Together, their life as an outsider is easier to bear and so the two of them dream of a more just and better future. However, the despotic Rocky has also cast an eye on Marcela and tries to drive her into a forced marriage. An arranged marriage with Rocky aims to free her family from debt. A race against time begins for Pepe and Marcela.

The production designer Momo Ehegartner and assistant director Ari Yehudit Richter later came on these trips to collect material and impressions for the look of the film.

reception

"By choosing such a classic, passionate love story and placing it in an unexpected context, Makarová shows the viewer that wherever our preconceived notions and prejudices are, there are just as many stories and fates waiting to be told." Ray (magazine)

"With her feature film debut" Zerschlag mein Herz ", extensively researched in Slovak Roma villages, the Slovak director Alexandra Makarová tells a" Romeo and Juliet "story based on real events. The immersion in a parallel society characterized by poverty, violence and lack of prospects is the life-hungry gaze of the Towards young lovers: Everything shines in a colorful light when Marcela and Pepe roam the Viennese night. The charm of the game of two very young acting debutants - Simona Kováčová was only 15 years old, the 17-year-old Roman Pokuta was hired by the director from the largest slum in Eastern Slovakia - and delicate experimental tricks such as play of colors, slow motion and individual images lifted out of the plot are reminiscent of Franco Zeffirelli's (1968) and Baz Luhrmann's (1996) famous adaptations of the tragedy. In the end, "Zerschlag mein Herz" is completely Shakespeare and its own powerful work , crowned with a heartbreak end beautiful song by the Russian Roma ensemble Loyko. " The moth

The Standard found that the film combined its Romeo and Juliet tale with a poetic realism that you hardly ever see in domestic cinema. “Makarová wisely refrains from depicting explicit violence and thus reserves the option of an empathic look. Dipped in strong, bright colors, this story of an impossible love had something fairytale-like and at the same time surreal about it - like a dream that you know in your sleep that it cannot be true. "

Andrey Arnold wrote in the daily newspaper Die Presse that the way the film tells its story stands out from the crowd of Austrian dramas. Instead of dreary gray, rich colors shone from the canvas, “instead of cool, analytical distance it sets great feelings.” The exaggerated style with slow-motion, dream sequences and expressive color dramaturgy helps to prevent some bumpy plot turns “from being scrutinized too much under the magnifying glass for credibility. We already know that in reality everything is worse. All the more remarkable how Zerschlag my heart wrests some poetry from this reality. "

"Beggars can't be choosers is the message at the heart of Alexandra Makarová's directorial debut, an ill-fated Roma love story set in Vienna" Cineuropa
