Karin Brandauer

Karin Katharina Brandauer (* October 14, 1945 in Altaussee as Karin Katharina Müller ; † November 13, 1992 in Vienna ) was a multiple award-winning Austrian film director and screenwriter . She directed over 40 films, many of which deal with Austrian history of the 20th century and how to come to terms with the past .

life and work

Karin Müller married her childhood sweetheart Klaus Maria Brandauer at the age of eighteen . The marriage comes from the son Christian (* 1963). She later studied at the Vienna Film Academy , where she finally obtained her directing diploma in 1975. She took her husband's last name. Karin Brandauer only started her own career after promoting that of her husband as much as possible. Her first works were documentaries as well as films that often dealt with Austrian history with difficult and uncomfortable subjects. As a director she always worked closely with the playwright Felix Mitterer . B. in the scripts written by Mitterer for Erdsegen (1985) and the two- parter Sold Home (1989). Other outstanding films were shown on German-language television under the titles Die Arbeitslosen von Marienthal (1988) or Sidonie (1990). Brandauer was characterized by a quiet but haunting directorial style.

Karin Brandauer died of cancer in 1992 at the age of 47. She was buried in the cemetery of her hometown Altaussee (Austria).
